Paragon New Zealand
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about how we work and how we handle personal information and privacy. If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch.
Is Paragon a licensed investigator?
Yes. Paragon New Zealand.Com Limited operates as licensed private investigators under the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010 (Licence No. [confirm]). We work nationwide across New Zealand.
How do you handle my personal information and privacy?
We respect your privacy and comply with the Privacy Act 2020 and the Information Privacy Principles. Because of the nature of our work, we handle information both about the people we deal with directly (clients, enquirers and website visitors) and about individuals who are the subject of a matter we have been engaged to investigate. The questions below explain how.
What personal information do you collect?
When you contact or engage us, we may collect your name, organisation, contact details, the details of your instructions, and billing information. When you use our website we may collect limited technical information and anything you submit through our online forms.
In the course of an engagement we may also collect personal information about the individual who is the subject of a matter — from our client, from publicly available and official records, from our own enquiries and surveillance, and from other lawful sources.
Are you allowed to collect information about someone without asking them?
In certain circumstances, yes. The Privacy Act 2020 recognises that personal information may be collected other than directly from the individual — including where it is necessary for the maintenance of the law, the enforcement of a legal right, or proceedings before a court or tribunal, or where direct collection would prejudice those purposes. We only collect and use such information where it is necessary for a lawful purpose connected with the engagement we are performing.
How do you use my information?
To provide and manage our services; to carry out the investigations, enquiries and related work we are instructed to undertake; to prepare reports and evidence for our clients and, where appropriate, for courts and tribunals; to communicate with you; to manage billing; and to meet our legal and professional obligations.
Who do you share my information with?
We treat the information we hold as strictly confidential. We may share it with the client who engaged us and their legal advisers; with courts and tribunals where required in connection with proceedings; with enforcement agencies where authorised or required by law; and with our own staff, agents and sub-contractors who are bound by confidentiality. We do not sell personal information or share it for marketing.
How is my information stored, and how long do you keep it?
We hold information in both physical and electronic form and take reasonable steps to keep it secure, with access limited to those who need it and our reports held to evidential standards. We keep information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes above, or for as long as we are required or permitted to retain it by law, after which it is securely destroyed or de-identified.
Can I see or correct the information you hold about me?
You can ask for access to the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. Contact us using the details below and we will respond as required by the Privacy Act 2020. In some cases we may be entitled to withhold access — for example where releasing it would prejudice an investigation, endanger a person’s safety, or breach another person’s privacy — and if so we will explain why.
Do you use cookies on your website?
Our website may use cookies and similar technologies so that it functions properly and so we can understand how it is used. You can set your browser to limit or block cookies, though some features may not work as intended.
How do I raise a privacy concern or complaint?
Please contact us first and we will do our best to resolve it. You may also raise a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (www.privacy.org.nz; 0800 803 909).
